Canary Grass

A tall perennial grass crop, of which there are two types: common canary grass (Phalaris aquatica) or reed canary grass (P. arundinacea). The former is longer-lived but the latter establishes faster.

Uses

Great in your plantations whilst young trees are establishing.

Value

An all-season nesting cover which can last up to 7 years once established in year 2. Generally sown with a companion crop to provide cover in year 1, such as triticale or mustard.

Fine and firm.

Drilling

Best to drill just under the surface in 30-36 inch rows, but can be broadcast. Subsequently spin mustard over the sowing at 5kg/ha, or over-drill with triticale at 30kg/ha.

Weeds
