Millet

A Mediterranean crop producing an abundance of highly nutritious seed. Like maize, it requires a warm seedbed before it will germinate and will not tolerate cold wet soils while it is becoming established.

Seed Rate

20kg/ha if a straight crop, but usually sown with maize at a reduced seed rate of 8kg/ha.

Uses

A mixture (such as Bushman's Blend) can provide cover and feed from September to January. Mixed millet provides limited cover but highly valued feed to December.

Small birds love it.

Sowing

May - June

Seedbed

Fine and firm. Requires warm soil similar to maize.

Drilling

Can be drilled just under the surface (0.5 inch) or broadcast. Do not sow too deep as it will not emerge!

Roll

Ideally a light roll.

Fertiliser

(soil index 2)
N 80kg/ha; P 55kg/ha; K 80kg/ha.

Bugs & Beasts

Not usually a problem.

Weeds

It is tolerant to some of the sprays applied to sorghum and maize, but be careful of residual maize chemicals (consult your advisor).
