Uses

Ideal to plant around the edge of a maize crop to keep it warm, forming like a box hedge.

Value

Birdgo can supply a useful amount of small seeds from December to February.

Sowing

Ideally May - June, but will still produce good cover if planted up to mid-July.

Seedbed

Fairly fine. Do not plant until soil temperature has reached 12°C over a five day period.

Drilling

Drill at a depth of 1 inch and width of 16-24 inches.

Roll

Very light - try to avoid any compaction.

Fertiliser

(soil index 2)
Same as maize: N 40kg/ha; P 60kg/ha; K 180kg/ha.

Bugs & Beasts

Because of its poisonous nature it rarely gets attacked and is quite useful for protecting other more susceptible crops.

Weeds

Similar to maize. Pre-emergence chemical can be used and there are a few products which can be used post-emergence (see your advisor).
